Blue Ridge Parkway Artist

I hate doctor's appointments.  Who doesn't?  They take a big chunk of time out of my busy day and this time it is the Eye doctor.  That one is always very long due to the drops time.  Oh well, I am glad there are people that are willing to help the rest of us out.  Quite a difficult profession, and oftentimes a thankless one.

My work will wait for me.  I think it likes to pile up, especially in the studio.

I saw a cute episode of Mike and Molly the other night and something Mike said reminded me of how, in many ways, I am one of the boys. 

When we are home Clyde and I dress in clothes that Good Will would probably not accept.  I have a lot of messed up clothes to paint in.  I hate wearing a smock.

Since we wear junky stuff we don't bother with napkins.

On the show Mike is home with the guys.  No girls.  He brings in the food in the living room, announces what they have , and says, "And if you have a shirt on, you have a napkin".

Lately Clyde has been saying some pretty wacky things which is typical.  As usual, they are funny, at least to me.  I love word play and he is great at it.  I don't know about other writers, but this one is fun to live with.  He keeps me laughing.

Anyway, the wild things he has been saying prompted me to say he had better watch out or he will land in a Loony Bin. 

His response was he was already there and they threw him out.  Hopeless case.

I am pleased and a little sad to sell one of my favorite Blue Ridge Mountain paintings, "Another Rocky Knob".  This one is special as it is the main site where my husband has researched birds and butterflies most of his life.  He also leads hawk watches there in the fall.

As I have said before, I live to paint but I can't take them with me so I am glad this painting is going to a good home in Richmond, VA.  The patron is buying it for her boyfriend for his birthday!  Original artwork is a great gift.  It is the unique expression of one artist.  Of course, prints will still be available.

I am still griping about how little time there is in a day to get everything done.  Both my husband and a Wordpress friend said if I had more hours I would just find more things to do.  They are right but I would like to try out an addition.  I think I would take a little more time off if there were more hours in the day.

Clyde said if it were possible to add two hours to the day the government would tax you for four!

A Naturalist's Legacy  Original 40" x 27" Oil Painting     $10,000

A Naturalist's Legacy is a painting in honor of my husband's naturalist achievements.  The painting is symbolic as he has taught old and young people about the beautiful region he was born in.

Clyde Kessler, a well known naturalist in Virginia and North Carolina  has been studying the bird and butterfly populations and migrations since 1975. He has participated in Christmas bird counts for the National Audobon Society since 1973.

 

His discovery in Virginia of the endangered Mitchell's Satyr in 1998 led to efforts to protect the species in the state. It was unknown in Virginia at the time. It is considered to be one of the most important wildlife finds in the second half of the 20th century.

Clyde has also led hawk watches since the mid 70's at Rocky Knob and other locations, and has surveyed Wildwood Park for plants and animal species for the city of Radford.

Yesterday I had a brainstorm, well maybe a brain shower but I thought it was a good idea!  As usual, I am fighting the urge to tear out my hair as I try to figure out a site I work on.  It occurred to me that we need another Holiday for the Greeting Card Companies. 

We can call it The I want to Throw my Computer out the Window Day. Think of how many people would buy a card! 

My husband's response was, think of how many people would be killed by computers falling out of windows.  Oh well, back to the drawing board- literally!

Window Al is an intense painting of my son by the window with a venetian cord in his mouth. He was always playing on the couch by the window when he was a toddler and he liked to chew on the cord.

I was forever taking it out of his mouth and putting it up high but it often fell down and he would be at it again. This is one of many fond memories of his young years.

My husband is better at preventing problems than I am so I am taking some advice he gave me a while back that, I, of course ignored.  He always gets up every thirty minutes when he works on the computer and stretches.  

We are both at the seat fatigue years and I let it get so bad that I have a problem so today I am following the rule and trying to slow down a little.  For me, I am working at a snail's pace.

I have probably shared this quote before but it bears repeating.  When you finally get your head together your body falls apart.  Oscar Wilde was right.  Youth is wasted on the young.  Now that I love my life and just wish someone could add hours to the day I wish I had that twenty year old body again!

Current Exhibition: Five Years of Art at Glencoe

This season marks the fifth year of Glencoe Museum’s “Gallery at Glencoe,” and to celebrate this milestone, the museum is hosting a series of three shows featuring the works of artists from the previous five years. The three shows will take place in August and November 2014 and February 2015.

The August show features the works of six talented artists whose works range from photography to painting to fiber art. These works reflect many different styles and provide something for everyone to appreciate—from traditional to avant-garde. My Beautiful Nudes

As I said yesterday I am going to spend some time blogging about my artwork that is not of the Blue Ridge.  Here are two more nudes that I am proud of.  

It is such a fascinating experience to work from a nude model.  The contours on a person constantly change and the volume and life of the figure are obtained when an artist can get a precise contour.

Wildflowers at Rock Castle Gorge on The Blue Ridge Parkway and Send out the Dog Sled...

I have quite a number of paintings that are based on scenes from Rock Castle Gorge and views from Rocky Knob.  I am pleased with all of them but if I had to pick favorites it would be the ones that include wildflowers.  The wildflowers are especially beautiful there and make for great color accents in my work.

Summer Path at Rock Castle Gorge is one of my favorite landscapes.  My husband took me around to all the paths that were not hiking paths and I especially liked this one because of the colors and the path was grass rather than dirt. 

It was probably just a place where a lot of people have walked through to the ridge to see more of the beautiful mountain vista.

My favorite wildflower found there and here in Radford, Virginia is Sweet Pea.  I love all colors but I am especially fond of magenta, probably because it is a red purple so it is both a warm and a cool color.

There is also Red Trillium, white Albultescens, and pink Claytonia virginica in this wonderful Blue Ridge Parkway area of Virginia.

Life with The Bird and Word Man

My husband, Clyde Kessler,  has always kept a close watch on the weather.  He follows all the reports and says some weather forecasters are more accurate than others.  

This morning he was quite concerned about the coming  ice and snow storm so he asked me if we needed to get to the store for anything before the roads got bad.

I told him we were seriously low on chocolate.

He said we better send out the dog sled. LOL!

I have so many paintings from Rock Castle Gorge that I think I will be blogging about this gorgeous Blue Ridge Parkway attraction for a while.  

Hikers especially love the trails at this site and my husband has actually walked as much as eight miles off the trail up and down the mountain to get photographs of butterflies.

His photographer, Bruce Grimes, has to carry heavy equipment to get good photographs and he often has to lie down on his stomach to get the shot.  I have always admired photographers!  

Good photography is quite an art and a job!

The actual trail is a loop that is  just short of 11 miles long.

It ranges from 1700 feet to 3572 feet at Rocky Knob.

I am especially fond of this oil painting of a road that leads to Rocky Knob.  It is quite an expressive work!

There are so many interesting trails around this area and the wildflowers in season are stunning!

When I was in school I had a teacher that was fond of country and mountain scenes and he remarked to me one time that He especially liked the kind of yellow/white grass seen along the dirt road in the painting at the top.

Most artists have a main medium and a secondary medium.  My main medium is oil paint but my secondary medium is pastels.

I am especially proud of my American Artist Award for "Near Smithfield Plantation"from famed pastelist Daniel Greene.

• People often don't like their photograph and with good reason!  The lens is curved and the resulting parallax can make for a picture that looks how a person looks in a curved piece of metal.  No one wants that!
• I pride myself that I can work around the parallax but I have been having a hard time lately with my digital camera.  I think the old 35mm cameras had less perspective distortion.

Anyway, I finally got a decent picture of my husband for the publication The Writing Disorder which will feature his poems this Spring.  The tenebristic light made all the difference!

Rocky Knob

My husband's favorite perch is Rocky Knob which overlooks Rock Castle Gorge on The Blue Ridge Parkway.  It is called Rocky Knob because the field is full of rocks. When my son was young he and a friend would run down the field to one of the larger rocks to play on. 

 I think my husband is more content on this perch than anywhere else on the parkway.

I will always have a picture in my mind of him sitting in his chair holding his binoculars or walking the trails with friends and relatives.

The painting at the top is one view of Rock Castle Gorge from Rocky Knob in Autumn.  I have done many paintings of the different views of Rock Castle Gorge.

 Black Bears Thriving

The black bear has made quite a comeback in the Blue Ridge Mountains which is great but hikers need to be aware of them and tread carefully.

On one visit to Rocky Knob my husband and son were coming back up the field at Rocky Knob and a bear was coming after them.  My husband wasn't aware of the bear but my son called out BEAR.

My husband turned around and reached up high in the air with a stick he was carrying and yelled at the charging bear.  The bear took off and I am very grateful that my son was paying close attention to what was going on and that my husband knew what to do.

Over the years I have taken many pictures of my husband that I have based paintings on and others he has used for promotion purposes for Poetry magazines.

I just don't understand why the pictures I take of him now aren't as great as the ones I took when we were first married!  Must be the camera!  LOL

Life with the Bird and Word Man

Yesterday my husband, Clyde Kessler, found out he published  "Fiddling in a January Thaw" in Contemporary Haibun Online.  It will be published sometime in March.      This is the ninth poem he has published in this magazine.  Yeah Word Man!

Nothing funny out of his mouth today.  Maybe tomorrow!                                 .

Rock Castle Gorge

If I had to pick a favorite locale on the great Blue Ridge Parkway it would be Rock Castle Gorge.  I have done many paintings of this area and my husband has spent so much of his time there that I told him he should have a mail box on Rocky Knob.

Many years ago the chestnut was the basis of the economy in Rock Castle Gorge but a chestnut blight in 1914 ravaged the trees in the United States and by 1919 the American chestnut trees died out in the Rock Castle Community.

At one time there were 30 families but by 1930 there were only 10.

The Blue Ridge Parkway was created through President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal. Those living in the Rock Castle community had to sell their homes. 

Young men from the community found a steady paycheck working for the Civilian Conservation Corps(CCC) helping to construct the parkway.

Some of my husband's ancestors lived in Rock Castle Gorge before the establishment of the parkway.

Every fall he leads Hawk Migration studies and has spent countless hours studying birds and butterflies there.

Sold Prints of Beauty and Danger, A Break in the Clouds, and Take two...

Just sold another canvas print of my second best-selling print, "A Break in the Clouds" to a great patron in Wisconsin.  A jewelry box with Beauty and Danger on it went to a great patron in Maine.         
I am so pleased to keep selling A Break in the Clouds, which is a beautiful vista of Rock Castle Gorge on The Blue Ridge Parkway. My husband has spent so much time researching Birds and Butterflies there that I used to tease him that he needed a mailbox there.  That was before everyone was on a cell phone.

It hasn't been that long that I started Kendall Expressions on my website, so I am very happy to sell another one of the selections!  I am especially proud of Beauty and Danger!

My husband and I are getting a lot of mileage out of jokes about all the medications we are told to ask our doctor about that are followed by lawyers claiming to get compensation for damages done by some of them.

My husband's latest quip is take two and call your lawyer in the morning!

Here are some Big Cat Facts

Recent research has discovered that lions can actually count!  They can tell whether or not the amount of lions roaring on a tape was fewer or greater than their own number and were able to decide whether to stay or flee if they were outnumbered!

Out of all cats, the tiger is the largest with a body length of up to 3.3 meters and weighing up to 760 lb.

The nick name for leopards is Prima Ballerina or Prince of Cats.

Believe it or not, jaguars have been seen in the United States. Just this past March, a jaguar was spotted in Arizona.

 

 

Pleased to sell another print of Burning Shore and It isn't funny...

I am so pleased to sell another print of one of my favorite paintings to a great patron in Mobile, Alabama!  The painting is owned by a New York patron and I miss it.  It was one of my Small Gem paintings and was 5"x7".  It is great that patrons can get a huge print of this beautiful painting.  It is one of my most expressive works.

I can't think of anything funny right now.  It is hard to joke around after tragedies.  Humor is one of life's joys that keeps me going but I can't help but be quite sad right now.  My son is no longer in school but if I had gotten a call that he was killed at school I'm not sure I would be here right now.

I am looking forward to being on The Hour of Joy on April 3rd!  It will be great to have my paintings on TV.  I love what I do and will be thrilled to talk about my work to such a large audience.

So far on The Mindy Project my best-selling print "Reaching Out" has been seen on the2d, 4th, 5th, and 8th episodes!  It is great to watch a show and see my work there!
