Life with The Word and Bird Man - Clyde Kessler

Clyde is still losing weight slowly but surely! He has about eight pounds to go and then he will decide if that is enough.  I figured out what he should weigh and we are going with that but he still may have a little extra to shed.  I do hope this takes the pressure off of his knee so it will get completely well!  I was teasing him last night about the diet.

What are you going to do when you lose all the extra weight?

Buy a large pizza.

You can't eat bread.

Okay, I'll slide the toppings onto some rice cakes.

Yuck!

I know he won't do that for two reasons.  The first reason is me.  The second reason is he is determined to keep the weight off - so pizzaless  rice cakes it is!

Here is another great Blue Ridge Parkway Ghost Story!

The Battery Park Hotel is now apartment building.  Supposedly it is haunted by a woman that was murdered in room 224.  On July 17th, 1936 Helen Clevenger was found murdered.  She had been beaten, her faced slashed and shot.

An employee Martin Moore confessed to the crime and died in the gas chamber.  On stormy nights Helen is seen wandering the halls.

The roof was the scene for a number of suicides and people report seeing bodies falling from it.

I found this great story on The Local Asheville Ghost Stories website!

Life with The Word and Bird Man - Clyde Kessler

Yesterday I wrote how our kitchen is a 24/7 diner for ants this time of the years.  We have a glucose poison they are supposed to eat and take back to the nest.  This is not happening. They just sit around the poison in a circle and have fun rather than take it back to the nest and annihilate it.

We have two kinds of ants.  Some very small ones and larger, blacker ones.

Today I was so happy that the large ones were not sitting around the poison talking and laughing!  I guess one of them finally went back to the nest.  There is still plenty of poison on the slips of paper so I don't have to serve them today.

The smaller ones are still here but they still have plenty of poison to sit around.

The waitress has a day off!

A Cheerful Still life!

I found another great ghost story on  Local Asheville Ghost Stories website!

Battle Mansion is located near The Grove Park Inn.  Supposedly, it is haunted by a servant girl named Alice.

They say she either fell or was pushed down the stairs.  The mansion is also haunted by the former owner, Samuel Battle.  He has been seen wearing a top hat and formal attire.

When the mansion was the location of 13WLOSTV Alice was often seen by employees.  She wears a long, old fashioned dress.  Sarah Harrison, the writer of this report talked with two employees of Grove Park Inn and one of them swore that some wires hanging from the ceiling were swaying back and forth on their own.

The other worker said he was grabbed when he walked down the stairs. The man that grabbed him fit the description of Samuel Battle.  He was presented a picture of the doctor and is sure of his claim.

SPOOKY!

The mansion was demolished in 2006.

Kessler Ant Diner -  Open 24/7!

Every year when the weather gets warm we have hoard of ants in our kitchen.  We have tried everything to get rid of them without success.  Ant traps don't work and we have tried a number of safe remedies that work at first and then the ants are back in full force.

One summer talcom powder did the trick for a while and then they were back.
This summer we have a remedy that consists of putting a few drops of a glucose solution with poison on small squares of paper.  The ants eat the solution and take the poison back to the nest.  This one was working great for a while!

Now they are all just sitting in a circle around the drops having a great time!

I thought it would be fun to look at all the beautiful falls in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains!  I have always been fascinated by falls and when I was in college I often hiked up to the Cascades in the Jefferson National Forest in Giles County.

The hike is two miles long and is an up hill climb.  It is great fun to watch the rushing water and the light coming through the trees.  I have one painting of what is called The Roman Road that I sold to a great patron in Martinsville.  I also sold a print to the creator of that section of the trail.

The water is extremely cold in the pool at the falls but I spent many summers at Rehoboth Beach where the water is also very cold so I liked swimming under the falls!  Some of my fondest memories are of that beautiful place!  I hope to go there again sometime soon.  It has been a while.

Upcoming Blue Ridge Discovery Center Happening!

July 27th, 2014: The Channels, Clinch Mountain

Leaders: Ronald Kirby and Fred Newcomb
One of southwest Virginia’s most spectacular and unusual natural preserves will be explored on this Blue Ridge Expeditions (BRE) hike which is sponsored by the Blue Ridge Discovery Center (BRDC). The part of Clinch Mountain known as The Channels is an area of huge sandstone rock outcroppings where ancient forces have created a maze of giant fissures, some of which now serve as passageways somewhat similar to slot canyons of the western states.
The hike will be a 5 mile round trip of moderate difficulty and will take place on Sunday, July 27. Geology expert Fred Newcomb and Ronald Kirby will lead the group. Participants should call (276) 579-4011 to register and for more information.

Valle Crucis Ghost Story

Another frightening story from Valle Crucis in The Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina!

The name of the town comes from two streams that meet at right angles in the middle of the valley.
Two men were driving by an old stone church on highway 194  when a huge dog with gleaming eyes jumped out in front of them.

The dog was a big as a man and had bristling fur and massive yellow teeth. The driver sped away only to see the dog in the rear view mirror following and actually keeping up with the car that was going 80 miles an hour!

The men really believed this dog was from Hell so the driver hit the accelerator one more time and sped over the bridge that goes across the two streams.

The dog stopped following them and the men wondered what it was about the water that stopped this supernatural dog!

The writer of the story claims he knew the driver of the car and considered him to be an honest man.

The writer is very cautious about traveling near the graveyard of the old stone church and counts the seconds before he gets to the bridge!

I found another Blue Ridge Parkway Creature Tale!  This one is a giant in Jackson County, North Carolina.

Judaculla

There is a rock near Cullowhee North Carolina that has strange inscriptions on it. According to Cherokee legend these markings were the work of a giant named Judaculla.  Supposedly he lived in the region long ago.

The name literally means, "He has them slanting", which refers to the giant's eyes.  He was awful to look at with seven fingers on each hand and seven toes on each foot.  He was seven feet tall and very ugly.

Judaculla had control of the elements and all of the game.

There are many explanations for the markings on the rock.  One involves a fall that left impressions, in particular, a foot impression with seven toes.  Another is that Judaculla left hunting instructions on the rock as he was the master of all game and allowed the Cherokees to hunt.

The rock was an important focal point for the Cherokees and was the site of religious rituals until their forced expulsion in the 19th century.  It is now an historic site that people can visit.

I found this legend on Stories from The Mountains online publication.

Mountain Lake in Giles County was the setting for the hit movie, Dirty Dancing with Patrick Swayze!

I found another paranormal tale about a wild man in The Blue Ridge Mountains!

The Scalawag from Blue Mountain

Jimmie Lee had heard tales about the legendary Big Foot or Sasquatch but never thought he would come into contact with the beast.  He was twelve years old and staying with his uncle and two cousins for the summer.

One morning his uncle told the boys he saw huge  prints near his apple orchard.   Jimmie and his cousins decided to pitch a tent to see if they could see Scalawag!  They were having fun and when the campfire got low they decided to go to sleep at around 11:00.

About thirty minutes later, the narrator heard a strange hissing sound.  He woke his cousin up and they both heard limbs cracking outside.

They saw with the flashlight a huge mammal like creature with long red fur eating apples in a crouched position. The creature turned and stared at them and they could see a strange human-like face with a pointy head.

The face was the only part of the creature that did not have fur and was an orange-brown color. It let out a screeching howl and ran off into the woods.

The next day they saw the huge prints with toes in the ground.  The uncle and aunt have heard the noise of the animal since this event and Jimmie Lee swears he has seen Sasquatch!

I got this story from About.com Paranormal Phenomena online

Life with the Word and Bird Man - Clyde Kessler

I have always been nervous about spiders since one of my childhood friends said she had a black widow spider in her garage.   I stayed out of there!  I am not that scared of them but I don't know one from the next so I am cautious.

The other day there was a small black spider in the computer room so I asked The Bird Man who is also very knowledgeable about insects to look at it.  I yelled from the room that there was a spider in the room and would he come check it out.

He asked me if it had it's own web.

I said I didn't know.  Maybe it is renting it.

The Word Man was not amused.

I am having a great time researching myths and legends of mountain sites that are near the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway!   Here is another Native America legend about the Devil!

The Devil's Tramping Ground

The Devil's Tramping Ground is located in Western Chatham county near Siler City.  It is forty feet long. The path forms a ring and is a foot wide. The center of the circle and the area around it is covered with grass and plants but nothing grows in the path.

If objects are place in the path at night they are removed by morning.

It is believed to be the ground where the devil walks in a circle planning his devious tricks. His foot prints make the path.  He is gone by morning.  The devil's foot prints are so hot the ground is scorched so nothing can grow there. It is believed animals avoid the path.

Spooky!

I got this great legend from Cherokee Indians - Native American myths and legends online publication

Worst 40th Birthday Card Ever

I just checked out a Good Neighbors DVD from the library.  I love it so far!  The opening scene has a man with a birthday cake with one candle.  He opens a card and reads it.

One of my favorite Autumn scenes!

More Appalachian Cherokee Legends!

The Moon-eyed people were, according to the Cherokees, a race of small men that  lived in the southern Appalachians. They were quite different from the Cherokee people in appearance.  Their skin was light and and they were bearded.

They were called moon-eyed because they could only see at night.  Their sensitive eyes were blinded by the sun so they were nocturnal beings that lived in underground caverns.

Cherokee cosmotology is complex.  They believe they live with other supernatural beings but the Moon-eyed people are never described as having other-worldly characteristics so some believe they may have been European settlers that arrived before Columbus.

The stone wall of Fort Mountain, George is said to be associated with these people. According to legend, this great wall is left over from a war between the Moon Eyed People and the neighboring Creek nation. The wall is 850 feet long with varying heights between two and six feet high.

Again, according to legend the Creek nation drove the Moon Eyed People off in a battle at night when the light of the moon was strong enough to weaken the nocturnal warriors.

I found this great story from the online publication Stories from the Mountains!

Blue Ridge Parkway Way Sirens

The Lorelei live in the pools of Ashville, NC and here is the Native America legend regarding their existence! They are said to live in pools of rapidly flowing water.

The Lorelei are sirens that appear to travelers that stop for a drink in the heat of the day.  They appear to be beautiful women.  It is said that soft music can be heard blending in with the sounds of the water.

Travelers see a beautiful woman beckoning to them.  When the traveler reaches out their hand to touch the lovely image, they are drawn into the water by cold slimy hands. A skull appears, a loud laugh, and then silence.

As I have said before, I think my husband is very good-looking. He was when we were young and he still is now.

He doesn't share that opinion and is always making jokes about his appearance.

The latest one is that the mirrors have 911 on speed dial and they hit it whenever he looks at his reflection.  The cops are really getting tired of answering all the calls.

I really do have flowers on the brain right now!

Today I found a wonderful Cherokee bear story about Autumn!

The Great Bear

A great black bear ,Nyah- gwaheh was terrorizing a village.  Children stayed out of the woods for fear of this animal. Four hunters set out to track down and kill Nyah- gwaheh.  The bear was said to possess magical powers and could cause its tracks to disappear.   The hunters had a magical dog that could see tracks days after they had vanished.

The four hunters were great hunters but one of them was fat and lazy.  He always wanted to take breaks.  On one break he reached into his pouch for a snack and found squirmy things in it which was a magical sign that the bear knew it was being hunted.

The bear ran and ran up the mountain to escape the hunters.  It was so huge that it was easy to track.  The forest was being torn up as it passed.  As the bear tired it stopped in its tracks to kill the annoying dog and one of the hunters succeeded in driving an arrow through it.

They cut the bear up and roasted it when one hunter noticed strange sparks in the darkness far below his feet.  They were no longer on the mountain but up in the air!  The powerful magic of the bear had led them to the world of the sky!

The dog started barking at the pile of bones and they came alive and the hunters chased the bear across the sky.

Legend has it that each autumn the hunters chase the bear across the sky and when it is killed the blood drips from the sky onto the trees.  The fat from the fire causes the grass to turn white.

I got this great story from the online publication, Cherokee Myths and Legends of The Black Bear

Sometimes my husband and I joke about how we got together.  It is rather unusual that a girl from McLean VA marries a naturalist poet from a town that is so small it could be on Hee Haws Salute the Small Town section of the show.

The latest quip is  I didn't hold a poem to your head.  You could have said no.

My response is I didn't see the puns on the wall.

Just kidding around!  I am very glad I married my mountain man!   He is the only one for me!

I am real excited about my next series of paintings!  I am going to do a number of large paintings of Pawleys Island including some sunset over the ocean scenes!  It has been a while since I did a shore scene so I am looking forward to these new works.

I am going to do one more Kendall Expression painting and then get started.  I have had a great time working on my own brand of Expressionism but I am anxious to get back to my own personal Impressionistic style. I really do live to paint and I love to find homes for my creations!  I just mailed Small Flowers to a great Texas patron!

Here are two of my favorite Kendall Expressions paintings and the Youtube video I did on a number of them.  I need to get back to making videos!  I will soon!

Blue Ridge Healing Waters

The Cherokees have a tradition about healing waters in the Blue Ridge Mountains.  According to legend there is a mysterious lake high up in the Smoky Blue Ridge mountains that all animals are aware of and trust to cure their wounds.

It is said that whenever a black bear is wounded by hunters it will go this lake and swim from one shore to the other and then be healed as soon as it reaches the other side.

Healing waters are a part of legends and myths of many cultures.  Perhaps that is where we get the myth for the Fountain of Youth.

The Cherokee Legends of The Black Bear

The Cherokee Indians did not always inhabit the mountains of the North East.  Some historians claim they have only been here five hundred years after migrating from the upper Mid-West but their traditions, legends and myths date back for thousands of years.

The Cherokee, along with all the Northeastern tribes were comfortable living with the black bear. The southern Blue Ridge Mountains have many Cherokee myths concerning the black bear.  They have often seen the black bear as a spirit guide to their people and considered the white bear to be a special spirit.  A few are born with white fur. It was a significant part of their ceremonial or religious practices.

Joining The Black Bears

One tale is about a boy that would leave the Ani tsa gu hi'  tribe for a while and come back with significant amounts of hair on his body that was not previously there.  The tribe asked him what was going on and he said he was spending time with the black bears where there was much food.  He told his tribe they should all join the bears and live in peace with abundant food.

This tribe was part of the Cherokee tribe and they all decided to leave the Cherokees to live with the bears.  They told the others not to worry, that they would live forever with the bears.  There are Cherokees today that believe some of their people became black bears and their descendants are alive today.

I found this story on Cherokee Myths and Legends of The Black Bear online publication.

Life with The Word and Bird Man - Clyde Kessler

While we were on vacation I had a great time watching River Monsters!  I loved to fish when I was a child so it was great to watch Jeremy Wade catch huge fish!  In one episode he talked about the fishing method called noodling.  The fisherman puts his hand in the fish's mouth and pulls it out of the water.  Considering the types of fish he catches, it is a dangerous sport.
My mountain man laughed when I told him I had never heard of noodling.  He said his Dad was doing that when he was a kid.  I replied that I bet it is new to people like me that are part of the mainstream culture, not isolated mountain people.  He said that was true.  His people were so far up the holler the creek ran dry trying to get out.
Just joking!  My husband's great-great uncle George Kessler was one of three founders of Ferrum College and Clyde Kessler is the most knowledgeable person I have ever known.  Don't trust those mountain stereotypes!

A Staunton Ghost in the Bed Room

I am still finding Staunton Ghost Stories.  Staunton, VA has so many ghost stories that there is an a tour people can take of the haunted sites!  Many of them are residential.
Here is a scary one!

One man claimed his apartment on Church Street was haunted by an evil presence. He claimed the ghost had shown itself to four different people, including his girlfriend!

The ghost covered her mouth and pinned her down when she was trying to sleep. They consulted a professional medium and were told not to sleep there anymore.  Of course,
he moved as soon as he could.

I found this ghost story on the online publication, Ghosts of America.

Life with The Word and Bird Man-Clyde Kessler

My husband, son, and I just got back from a great vacation at Pawleys Island in South Carolina!  The weather was great, the food was great, and we stayed in a gorgeous, roomy house one minute from the beach!

Clyde saw 93 species of birds just walking a couple of minutes to a dock and my son and I got our ocean fix for the year!
Clyde planned everything.  He found the house, decided which week would be a good week, etc.
It was such a great vacation that I told him he missed his calling!  He should have been a Wedding Planner!

The groan he let out was heard throughout the whole island.  There were rumors that the Real Estate Office had to close down for hours due to the incredible number of phone calls regarding the groan!

No offense to wedding planners!  Just thought this would be a good funny for the blog.

Staunton Theater Ghost Story

Yesterday I wrote about the little girl that haunts a Staunton Virginia theater.  There is a little more to the story and another story about a male ghost on the premises!
Sometimes rolls of coins would disappear and then show up in stacks and patterns in the projectionist room. It looked as though the ghost was playing with them. The girl seemed to be most active in the upper story and the projectionist room.
A tall man dressed in a Victorian suit has been seen in what was the orchestra pit.  The suit did not fit.  It was too tight across the shoulders. As I mentioned yesterday, the theater was originally an opera house.
I found this story online at Ghosts of America.

As always, The 40th Mount Rogers Naturalist Rally was a great success!  Now Blue Ridge Mountain lovers can look forward to next week's Farm Days!   Clyde spent his early years on a farm and his father still has an extensive garden that we have enjoyed over the years!  No one grows corn like Herman Kessler!
The Blue Ridge Discovery Center is hosting Farm Days at Matthews Living History Farm in Independence VA!  Here is the address and a map can be found on the Blue Ridge Discovery Center website. Staunton Theater Ghost Story

The Gypsy 4 Theater of Staunton was once an Opera House. A fire broke out in the mid 1900's and significant damage was done to the building.

According to a former projectionist, very strange things have happened there.  Once while threading a movie the person's eight inch braid was lifted straight up in the air.

A young blond girl, dressed in white and about eight years old was sitting on the pallet playing with the projectionist's hair!  She silently laughed and vanished.  The projectionist's mother
claimed to have run ins with the girl also, and she is a skeptic concerning paranormal sitings.

I found this ghost story on Ghosts of America online publication.

Life with The Bird and Word Man - Clyde Kessler

I have mentioned several times that my naturalist husband is uploading bird sightings to Cornell University.  Yesterday he told me he is ranked 10th in the country for this information.  In a number of blogs I wrote he is uploading over 2000 files.

I don't know how I got that so wrong!  He has already uploaded 15,000 files and says he has over 30,000!  Wow!
