In these works I am emphasizing my expressive side. I am very pleased with the look in the tiger's eyes and the linear patterns of the stripes. The painting is on stretched canvas without frame.

I have mentioned two bruises I cannot account for and both times my husband had a quip of how I am probably smacking him at night to stop his snoring.  He is still congested and that is usually the only time he snores.

Well, yesterday I mentioned that my thumb on my left hand is sore.  Of course his explanation is that I am probably poking him the eye since the hand slap and kick didn't stop the snoring.

I seriously doubt I am attacking my husband when I am sleeping but his quips do make me laugh!

"Shadows on Sunflowers" is an intimate look at some sunflowers in a vase against a backdrop of shifting light. The swirling textures enliven the surface and the colors are intense. The brushwork is complicated and sensuous.

I have always been fascinated with the colors of light and shade. I remember reading somewhere that many people consider warm and cool colors together to be like the music of the spheres.

North Albemarle, McLean, VA is one of my series of garden paintings in McLean where I am from. This is a low-level impasto painting with a constant variation in color. The mood is cheerful and the surface is complex. The painting is in a silver-colored metal frame.

Clyde is very good about helping me with a stir fry meal I like to make.  I am not much of a cook but this is one meal I make that I really like!  I was extremely tired last night and when he asked me which pot I was going to use to par boil the broccoli and snow peas, I said the big round one. 

I cracked up but he was not amused.  I wonder if there are any other shaped pots.

 Cascading Day Lilies is an intimate look at some Day Lilies my husband planted in our yard. He certainly has a green thumb. 

All of his flowers look great! I especially like the red/green contrast in this work. Years ago at a competition May Stevens exclaimed when she met me, Oh the red/green painter! I do especially like those two complementary colors. If you look carefully at my paintings you will find all the colors of the rainbow in all of them

A while back I wrote about a mouse that had settled into our kitchen.  My husband bought a trap that was designed to catch the mouse and then re-locate it.  The mouse was caught and my husband took it down to the river.  He said the mouse looked at him with the saddest eyes.  It was, of course, perfectly happy living in a cozy home and snacking on our food.

A few days ago when I opened one of the shelf doors a horrible smell came out.  I have been cleaning out the space and haven't found a thing that would cause such a horrible smell.  I told my husband that maybe a relative of the first mouse that knew about the trap avoided it and died a natural death behind the shelves where we can't get it.  Revenge is sweet!

Basket of Yellow is a striking still life that features a number of different types of flowers but the yellow ones stand out as the focal point of the painting. This is one of my most expressive still lifes with strong cool colors in the shadows and vibrant warm colors in the light. The color contrast creates an inviting mood. I always work hard to put a lot of life in still lifes.

I was trying to remember a famous saying about how to be happy in life.  The saying consists of three requirements for contentment.  I couldn't remember the third one and it was bugging me so I asked my husband and he didn't know what I was talking about.

In order to be happy one must have someone to love, something to do, and....

Suddenly I remembered.  The third one is spaghetti!  Something to look forward to.  I look forward to spaghetti every Monday night. It is a family tradition!

"Radford Flower Garden" is a close-up of part of a garden in Radford, VA. The owners must use a lot of annuals as the garden is different every year. 

I am always on the look-out for red/green color combinations. I am quite the colorist but I like red/green color systems better than any others. 

As I have mentioned before, years ago at a competition when I was introduced to the famous artist May Stevens, she exclaimed, Oh, the red-green painter! I won a purchase award at the show.

"Birthday Party" or "A Child's View" is a painting done from a photograph I took at a two-year-old's party. I have often been asked why the title is "Birthday Party" since there are no balloons, cake, etc.

The two-year-olds were involved in parallel play and I wanted to paint something that showed the viewer how that age group sees the world. Since they are usually on the floor playing by themselves their view is oftentimes hands and legs of adults hence the second title.

I had never heard of a Birthday party for two-year-olds before this one.

My son had such a great time there.  The first painting has parallel play with-in the context of adult hands and feet. This one focuses of the interaction between the adults and toddlers.

My husband says a lot of strange things. That is putting it mildly.  Anyway the other day he said he was going to make a peanut butter pie sandwich.  He said that because he uses rice cakes instead of bread.  I told him we didn't have any pie to make a sandwich with. 

He said he was going to make one anyway. 

I said he was going to make a peanut butter sandwich pie because he is a fruit cake.

A Naturalist's Legacy is a painting in honor of my husband's naturalist achievements.  The painting is symbolic as he has taught old and young people about the beautiful region he was born in.

Clyde Kessler, a well known naturalist in Virginia and North Carolina  has been studying the bird and butterfly populations and migrations since 1975. He has participated in Christmas bird counts for the National Audobon Society since 1973.

 

His discovery in Virginia of the endangered Mitchell's Satyr in 1998 led to efforts to protect the species in the state. It was unknown in Virginia at the time. It is considered to be one of the most important wildlife finds in the second half of the 20th century.

Clyde has also led hawk watches since the mid 70's at Rocky Knob and other locations, and has surveyed Wildwood Park for plants and animal species for the city of Radford.

Rabbit in the Pool is a fun genre painting of my son and husband in a baby pool on our deck. My son had a lot of pool toys but my favorite one was a rabbit balloon toy with a carrot in his mouth. This painting is full of life!

Yesterday I had a brainstorm, well maybe a brain shower but I thought it was a good idea!  As usual, I am fighting the urge to tear out my hair as I try to figure out a site I work on.  It occurred to me that we need another Holiday for the Greeting Card Companies. 

We can call it The I want to Throw my Computer out the Window Day. Think of how many people would buy a card! 

My husband's response was, think of how many people would be killed by computers falling out of windows.  Oh well, back to the drawing board- literally!

I have done a number of family and friend portraits over the years.  I have also done some commissions but most of my people paintings have been done because I wanted to.  They are for sale and a number of them have been sold.  My son's friends were a favorite source of inspiration. 

I have also done a number of paintings of my husband and son.   I remember, years ago, when Elaine DeKooning visited Radford University, she made a remark about portraits.  She said they were like smoking cigarettes.  A habit she couldn't break.  I don't smoke but I do like to paint portraits and welcome commissions.

My husband is very good about helping with my stir fry meal.  I do most of the work but he helps here and there.  Yesterday I asked him to pound the beef to make it tender.  I think that works much better than tenderizers.

I still have a lot of beautiful nude drawings to share here.  When I was in school I loved using different mediums to draw the model.  Each medium has a unique expression and it is always fun to explore all the ways it can be used.  

There is no end to the different ways charcoal, ink, conte crayon, etc. can be used to enhance the drawing and make it something to be looked at for it's own sake.   

Although I like all styles of art, I have never understood the fascination with photo-realism, or, as some artists call it, hyper-realism.  When an aritst seeks to copy what photographs capture I wonder that they don't just make photography their medium. 

 I have no problem copying a photograph or painting in a hyper-real style but I only do that if it is a commission.  My work is about my reaction to what I see and how to put myself into it.

Life with The Word and Bird Man - Clyde Kessler

My husband and I come from a time period when not many people tattooed their body.  Now it is rare to see people without tattoos.  

I love what one person said on Facebook in response to the fact he had no tattoos.  He asked if the person had ever seen bumper stickers on a Ferrari.   

 Don't get me wrong.  I am not against them, they just aren't for me.

 We were discussing this on a walk and my husband was a little ahead of me.  I think many people will not like the way the tattoo looks as they age.  He replied that they can be taken off.  I said and it hurts, too!  He laughed because he had just said it was a painful procedure. 

 I didn't hear him say that. Well, it does hurt!!!!!
