I have started a new Blue Ridge Parkway painting and it is going great!  Of course they are always great at the beginning before the battle royale.  I will never stop loving painting and I hope someday to drop dead with a paint brush in my hand.  

Looking forward to tomorrow in the studio.  So many paintings.  Never enough time.

"Radford Flower Garden" is a close-up of part of a garden in Radford, VA. The owners must use a lot of annuals as the garden is different every year. 

I am always on the look-out for red/green color combinations. I am quite the colorist but I like red/green color systems better than any others. 

As I have mentioned before, years ago at a competition when I was introduced to the famous artist May Stevens, she exclaimed, Oh, the red-green painter! I won a purchase award at the show.

The Red Rose is a sumptuous, colorful still life that is centered around one red rose. The vase is full of roses and some wildflowers but the red rose stands out as the gleaming focal point of the painting. I am especially pleased with the color contrast and vibrant linear accents in this work

This pastel painting, "Skating", is the last of my skating paintings.  This one is a celebration of my sister Anne.   In elementary school she joined the girl scouts and earned a badge for ice skating.  The instructors at the rink were so impressed with her natural ability that they encouraged her to take lessons.  

 

 

She became quite an accomplished skater and completed three of the preliminary tests to be an Olympic contender.  She decided she didn't want to compete but has been an Ice Skating Instructor in Sterling, Virginia for many years.  This painting is a celebration of her gift.  She is the figure in the top center and the other skaters are famous skaters.  I changed their faces so I wouldn't run into any copyright issues.

 

 

I have always been impressed with her skill.  I also ice skated when I was a child but just for fun and exercise.  When I moved to Southwest Virginia I took up roller skating since the nearest ice rink is in Roanoke, VA.  As I mentioned in previous blogs, I was very disappointed when the local rink closed this past Spring.  I hope another one opens up in the future.

Here are two more paintings from my skating days in Christiansburg, VA.  I am so sorry the Dominion rink closed and a few months ago Adventureworld Skating Rink also closed!  If I want to skate now I have to travel to Roanoke.  I wish there were more skaters in this area.

Yesterday I was talking to my husband about shingles as we were reminded by the TV for the umpteenth time to get the vaccine.  I was surprised that he hadn't gotten one yet.  I got mine a year ago and now I have to remember to get one every seven years.  I have heard how awful shingles are so I do want to prevent an outbreak.

My husband wasn't concerned.  He has a lot of pain in various parts of his body due to two different falls.  His response was why should he get a shingles shot.  The shingles would be just one more pain to deal with.  Take a number!

I'm not much for nagging but I think I will try to get him to get the shot.

I am pleased to blog about my people paintings.  They are very important to me.  My two favorite models are my son and my husband. 

I have done a number of paintings of both of them over the years and plan to do a new one of my husband when I can find some time and he is not out studying nature on a mountain top!

Clyde and Alan  Original Oil Painting has been Sold

This painting is of Alan when he was a few months old.  Clyde did not like to sit in a rocking chair so when he put him to sleep he would lie down and rock him. 

I noticed that almost every time he held him in his arms, Alan would go to sleep.  I guess he associated Daddy's arms with bed time.

This painting is of Alan when he was a toddler.  He liked to stare out the window.  I am especially pleased with the energetic brush work in this painting.

Fall is Hawk migration time and hundreds are flying over! Two of Clyde's friends, Tom Moser and Todd Frederickson led a hawk watch at Rocky Knob with a class and there were 500 hawks, mostly Broad-winged hawks!

I have done a number of family and friend portraits over the years.  I have also done some commissions but most of my people paintings have been done because I wanted to.  They are for sale and a number of them have been sold.  My son's friends were a favorite source of inspiration. 

I have also done a number of paintings of my husband and son.   I remember, years ago, when Elaine DeKooning visited Radford University, she made a remark about portraits.  She said they were like smoking cigarettes.  A habit she couldn't break.  I don't smoke but I do like to paint portraits and welcome commissions.

My husband is very good about helping with my stir fry meal.  I do most of the work but he helps here and there.  Yesterday I asked him to pound the beef to make it tender.  I think that works much better than tenderizers.

Hey, please pound the beef.

Should I slam the ham, too?

We don't have any ham.

Okay, I will be Chief of the Beef.
