Hanging
Beauty is an intense oil pastel painting of flowers on our veranda. The
strong light effect creates a beautiful atmosphere and great warm/cool
color contrast. My husband, Clyde Kessler, is a well-known naturalist in
the New River Valley and in addition to his bird and butterfly
knowledge, he is also very knowledgeable about flowers and good at
growing them. He has the green thumb in the family. Mine is usually
covered in oil paint.

Rose
Start is a glowing oil pastel of our rose bush when it was first
starting out. We have a small white fence around it to protect it. I
have always been fascinated with the look of white objects in the
evening. They seem to glow from with-in and I captured that look in this
work. Carnival Evening by Henri Rousseau is a great example of this
effect. I especially enjoy looking at that painting for the use of the
white that creates a magical effect.

Like
any married couple we have learned a lot about our different
backgrounds over the years. One thing my mother did that Clyde's mother
did not do was repeat helpful sayings. I heard these so many times
that they got to be quite irritating and the most irritating thing was I
was too stubborn to apply them to my life.
The one I hate the most to
this day is Penny wise and Pound foolish. I am amazed at the number
of times I have chosen the cheap route that ended up costing me more
later. I actually make Clyde come with me to the store to help me buy
certain items so I won't get stuck with the cheap one that caught my
eye. He always gets the better item, usually the medium priced one.
Anyway
I like to change some of those sayings and the other night when I was
fooling with laundry late in the evening I said to Clyde, "Women's work
is never done and it ain't no fun." I think that is an improvement on
that one.

Beauty is a sumptuous look at some pink tulips my husband grew. I love
the way they are stretching out to get the sunlight which is the reason

Day Lilies is an intimate look at some Day Lilies my husband planted in
our yard. He certainly has a green thumb.
All of his flowers look
great! I especially like the red/green contrast in this work. Years ago
at a competition May Stevens exclaimed when she met me, Oh the red/green
painter! I do especially like those two complementary colors. If you
look carefully at my paintings you will find all the colors of the
rainbow in all of them

A
while back I wrote about a mouse that had settled into our kitchen. My
husband bought a trap that was designed to catch the mouse and then
re-locate it. The mouse was caught and my husband took it down to the
river. He said the mouse looked at him with the saddest eyes. It was,
of course, perfectly happy living in a cozy home and snacking on our
food.
A
few days ago when I opened one of the shelf doors a horrible smell came
out. I have been cleaning out the space and haven't found a thing that
would cause such a horrible smell. I told my husband that maybe a
relative of the first mouse that knew about the trap avoided it and died
a natural death behind the shelves where we can't get it. Revenge is
sweet!

Basket
of Yellow is a striking still life that features a number of different
types of flowers but the yellow ones stand out as the focal point of the
painting. This is one of my most expressive still lifes with strong
cool colors in the shadows and vibrant warm colors in the light. The
color contrast creates an inviting mood. I always work hard to put a lot
of life in still lifes.

was trying to remember a famous saying about how to be happy in life.
The saying consists of three requirements for contentment. I couldn't
remember the third one and it was bugging me so I asked my husband and
he didn't know what I was talking about.
In order to be happy one must have someone to love, something to do, and....
Suddenly
I remembered. The third one is spaghetti! Something to look forward
to. I look forward to spaghetti every Monday night. It is a family
tradition!

have started a new Blue Ridge Parkway painting and it is going great!
Of course they are always great at the beginning before the battle
royale. I will never stop loving painting and I hope someday to drop
dead with a paint brush in my hand.

"Radford
Flower Garden" is a close-up of part of a garden in Radford, VA. The
owners must use a lot of annuals as the garden is different every year.
I
am always on the look-out for red/green color combinations. I am quite
the colorist but I like red/green color systems better than any others.
As I have mentioned before, years ago at a competition when I was
introduced to the famous artist May Stevens, she exclaimed, Oh, the
red-green painter! I won a purchase award at the show.

Red Rose is a sumptuous, colorful still life that is centered around
one red rose. The vase is full of roses and some wildflowers but the red

Life is an impasto floral that has an intricate surface and flowing

Library Butterfly Garden is a painting I did of a flower garden my
husband started at the Radford Public Library. The purpose was to
attract butterflies into the area. The painting has beautiful color
contrast and a nice flowing motion.

other day I saw a very funny but somewhat vulgar poem on Facebook about
Winter. It was only one line and then The End. I showed it to my poet
husband and he joked that it is not a Haiku - It is a Lowku! Love it!

I
am still struggling with my latest Pawleys Island painting but I can
see light at the end of the canvas! It should be done today and then
there will be finesse time another day as I fine tune it. I will be
getting back to my main theme which is The Blue Ridge Parkway. I am
looking forward to getting back to this gorgeous region.
For
now I thought I would present more of my floral work. I have made a
number of Youtubes on my florals but still have a lot more to show so

Tulip Burst Original 10" x 8" Oil Painting $168

Tulip
Burst is an exceptionally sensuous, sensitive, whimsical floral. This
painting was done from my imagination and I am especially pleased with
the color patterns, brushwork, and soft, glowing surface. I love to work
with complementary colors and the over all orange blue effect in this
one is especially appealing.
If viewers look
at each tulip they will see a continual change in color and texture. The
color nuances in each flower emphasis the blue-orange color scheme in
the whole painting. I like to paint flowers but my favorite flower is
the tulip.

"Tree
Poem" is a painting that reminds me of the famous poem, "Trees" by
Joyce Kilmer. I consider my work to be visual poetry with complicated
systems of color and texture. In this painting I wanted the land, sky,
and flowers to visually support the tree.

A
few days ago I was having a strange pain behind my right knee. It
would be intense at times and then go completely away. I kept thinking
it was gone and then it would start up again. I mentioned this to my
husband and said that maybe as we get older we get quirky pains. His
response was that if that is true then his whole body is a quirk. The
joys of getting older. LOL

My
husband calls me every once in a while to check on things and stop me
from working for a few minutes. Today I had a fun thing to tell him. I
am especially tired today but still at my work. I practically fell
into my oil painting today which would have been a horrible mess. I
will never forget the time I saw an art student actually sit in her
palette. Glad I always stand up.
Anyway,
the funny thing that happened today was at lunch. I always fix a
sandwich and take it and a drink to our bedroom so I can watch a video.
Today when I reached for my drink it was a bottle of mustard. I can't
believe I brought that back instead of my drink. Tired, tired, tired!

Here
are two more of my paintings that are based on paintings I have seen in
my sleep. I have a lot of nightmares but I also have a lot of great
dreams. I don't try to figure them out but I am always glad when I
dream of someone that has passed on. This happens a lot and my father
and my grandparents live in my dreams. It is great to see them again
and the dreams are almost always happy ones.

Dream
River is typical of these paintings. There is usually a lot of this
icy blue color and objects seem to sway around the space. Water is one
of my favorite subject matters in my work so I am not surprised that I
dream of river paintings. I often dream I am at the beach in the ocean.

I
especially like this one. There is something about the girl's eyes
that is mystical. I have always leaned towards scientific explantions
of strange events but I like to quote this line from Hamlet. There are
more things in heaven and earth , Horatio, than are dreamt of in your
philosphy.
Towhee Hill Studio Visits
I
wanted to be sure to let readers know that I do schedule studio
visits. I like to show people my work in a home environment. My work
looks best when it is illuminated from outside natural light and in
incandescent light.
I
do require a phone call so I can make sure the visitor won't trip in my
studio and to make sure I have out any particular works the visitor is
interested in.

Dreamscapes
About
a decade ago I began having dreams in my sleep of paintings I had never
seen before. They look like mine but are less distinct and seem to
wave. They also have less contrast and a lot more blue than my other
work. A few years ago I decided to try to put some of these on canvas.
I
rarely have those dreams now but when I do the paintings are by someone
else in the dream. How strange that I would invent paintings for other
people in my sleep!

I
especially like the flowing motion in this painting. The flowers and
leaves move around the space much in the same way that the lines and
colors in the cloth do. It is a feast of color!

This
morning when my husband called me to get me up I was so tired that we
had a strange conversation. We can't get certain organic items here so
once a week he picks up some things at a store where he works.
I know you want tomatoes but what about cabbage?
We still have some from last week.
I didn't see any. Where is it?
In the refrigerator.
The refrigerator? I never thought to look there.
Ha ha! Wow am I tired. Maybe I put it in the dryer.
Okay and I'll check my sock drawer. It must be around there somewhere.

Here are two more child paintings. I especially like the movement in Bubble. The colors seem to dance around the little girl!
When
my son was young he loved to blow bubbles and my husband bought one of
those huge bubble blowers and had all the neighborhood kids standing
around him while he sent giant squirming bubbles into the air!

Bubble
is a wonderful genre painting. The little girl has a fancy bubble
blower and is focusing on the large bubble in front of her. This
painting has great color nuances and pleasant, flowing space. It is on

husband starts work much earlier than most people so he is my alarm
clock. He calls me from work and most of the time I am already up.
Today I was looking at some Facebook posts when I found something I
liked very much!
After all
these years with The Word Man I greatly appreciate word play. I liked
it before I met him but now it is especially funny to me!
The one I saw today was - I JUST MADE A SONG ABOUT A TORTILLA. ACTUALLY IT IS MORE OF A WRAP.
