Working hard so I can get out of this house!  I haven't been to the Aquatic Center in weeks due to illness and snow.  I hope I can get there today.  Laundry is almost done!

More snow was dumped on us yesterday and Clyde and Alan spent a lot of time digging out.  What a winter!

Anyway, as usual, daily life has prompted another crazy remark from Clyde.  I told him how there are people in Florida that wish they could get some of our cool since temperatures in some places are getting so high.

Clyde's response was a new business promotion.  Everyone that buys a print gets a free bucket of snow mailed to them.  Customer must provide the bucket.

Don't think I will have any takers on that one!  LOL!

I took a break from my new Pawleys Island series to paint the gorgeous Cascades waterfall in Giles County, VA.  This beautiful site is one of the most popular attractions of  The Jefferson National Forest and I have made the two mile hike to the falls many times .

The hike is two miles and it is mostly up so I know I will be tired but it is worth it.  The pool below the falls is icy cold but that never stopped me from swimming in it.   I spent many summers vacationing at Rehoboth Beach, Delaware and the water there is always cold.

I am very pleased with the painting!  I think I captured the energy of the falls and the beautiful, serene setting with a subtle light effect that emphasizes the warm/cool color contrast.

I am still finding news ghost stories.  Here is a Staunton, Virginia spooky tale!

The Bell Grae Inn Ghost Story

This Inn is haunted by Mrs. Bagsby since the 1800's. She unlocks door and play other tricks. It has been reported that she has caused the Inn's hot water supply to bypass a guest that she does not like.
The Inn claims guests can experience this ghost if they stay in Room 7!  I thought 7 was a lucky number.  Not in this case!

Beautiful view of Radford Virginia's popular park!

Today I came across a very interesting ghost story written by "an old man" according to the writer.  It is intriguing to me that the author has a theory that perhaps we see these things when we are young and more perceptive to what is around us. He has not had a supernatural experience since this story.

As I have mentioned before, I am a skeptical person but I have had four strange events in my life that I cannot explain.  Interestingly enough, the latest one was a few months ago and I am not young by most people's estimation of what young is.

Lunch Bucket Man

The writer's story happened when he was a student.  He was traveling home to Roanoke via Rt. 81 via Wildwood Road.  Supposedly the Wildwood Inn has quite a spooky reputation. The Inn was closed and he was pretty much the only car on the road.

As he approached the ramp to Wildwood Road he saw a tall thin man holding a lunch bucket, not a pail, but a bucket.  The writer said he had seen that type of bucket carried by coal miners.  When the car lights passed over the man there was no shadow. 

He didn't move or change expression.

He seemed to vanish and the writer tried hard to figure out what had happened but could not come up with a logical explanation.  He has not had a similar experience.  This was in the early 1980's.

The Mount Rogers 40th Naturalist Rally is tomorrow!  I wanted to be sure to alert everyone again to this great event!

The 40th Annual Mount Rogers Naturalist Rally

This BRDC signature event highlights the crown jewel of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Southwest Virginia.  The Mount Rogers area, which includes Virginia's three tallest peaks, has long fascinated scholars and explorers.  Not only is there a wide variation in altitude, there are many different ecosystems and mini-ecosystems within a short drive or hike of each other.

The 2014 Rally will be May 9 & 10.

An Introduction to Native Bees and Other “Beneficial” Arthropods of the Mid-Atlantic - learn about common native bees we can support by protecting and planting pollinator habitat. The program will highlight nesting habits of some of the 500 species of native bees in Virginia, as well as other pollinators, predators, and parasitoids that benefit from pollinator habitat.

Smart View on The Blue Ridge Parkway and This is Spring?

Another beautiful vista on The Blue RIdge Parkway is Smartview.  I have done one painting and one pastel painting of this great place.  I will never forget the day we had a picnic there.  I was teaching at Radford University and working hard at motherhood, painting, and housework and I was so tired I was practically lying down on the picnic table.

I still wanted to take some pictures to base some painting on so I got up and got some great shots of Smart View and then turned around and took a shot of the creek which was so peaceful.  

Most of my paintings are based on my photographs and slides.  Pein air painting is not for me.

My work is meant to be viewed indoors and it is done with many layers going from thin to thick paint.  If I paint outdoors and then bring it inside, it is a completely different painting.

Creek at Smartview was bought by a great Blacksburg patron who later commissioned me to paint a creek scene with his wife and a child by her side.  She was pregnant and knew nothing of this painting.  

A Baby shower was coming up and he worked on a baby tapestry that was the same size as the painting.  At the shower he had my painting under a sheet of fabric and his wife told everyone she already knew what it was.  She was sure  it was the tapestry. 

When he took down the sheet and revealed a painting with her and a child by a creek she was flabbergasted.

What a great gift, great surprise,  and a great husband!

My husband is quite a self-taught scholar and one of his favorite subjects is the weather.  He has been studying the patterns all his life and when he was a child he would tell his mother what to expect and she said he was right most of the time.

I always check with him if I am going out anywhere.   One time at an outdoor  show in Roanoke on a very sunny day he came up to me and said I had five minutes and then it would be raining.  Everyone around me thought he was wrong.  Five minutes later there was a river running down the road.

Needless to say he is concerned with what he calls climate disruption.  He agrees with scientists that think global warming is real whatever the cause which brings me to my blog title.  This is Spring?  There is another cold front on the way and I am not looking forward to it!
