I am real excited about my new painting that I haven't started yet!  The Word and Bird Man is going to sit for me!  I have done a number of paintings of my favorite model but they were all based on photos.  This is going to be great!  If you have ever wondered why artists paint themselves or family members there is a very logical reason.  Family members don't charge a modeling fee.  There are other reasons as well but I think the lack of a modeling fee is number one - at least it is to me!

I have started setting up for a portrait in oils of Clyde.  Right now I am deciding on the spacing, value patterns, and lighting.  I had Clyde in there yesterday to work on the lighting.  After a while I told him I didn't need him just yet.  Still have some decisions to make.  He suggested I get a monkey to sit - a better looking monkey.  No, he is the monkey, I mean man I want for the painting!

Glad to get some rain!  We have some tomato plants and they were sagging a little.  Clyde can't eat tomatoes so I think it is real nice of him to plant them for me and Alan.  I am trying real hard to get all of my work done so I can get out of here. 

I am one of those rare girls that does not like to shop but my summer shirts are falling apart so I am going to suck it up and get to a store.  Maybe I will break my ten minute shopping record!

I love to goad Clyde because he almost always comes up with  a funny I like to post.  Laughter is very important to me and sometimes he makes me laugh so hard I have to gasp for break.  So far, we haven't had to call 911!

As I have mentioned before I have always thought Clyde was a handsome man and he still is after all these years.  He thinks I am kind, blind, and out of my mind but I don't agree.

Since yesterday was our anniversary I told him I married Gorgeous George.  His reply was then why did you marry me, too?  Ha ha!  I am not a bigamist, you fool!

I have a number of lithographs that are not online so I am trying to catch up on my uploads.  All of my lithographs were done when I was getting my MFA.  I enjoyed lithography very much but the set up for that type of printing is more than I want to get into it. 

I live to paint and a lithography press costs as much as a car and I would really need another studio for all the different stages of the work. 

I am glad I still have a number of them and have hand colored some as well.  Here is the black and white version of Kitchen.

Something very strange has happened this summer.  We started out with the biggest army of ants I have ever seen.  They would come in every day and sit around in a perfect circle around the poison drops I set out and just keep coming.  Some days there were just a few so I would put the drops out and another army would come in. 

There were so many that after a few days there were three perfect circles around the drops. I guess the ones in the back would just push the ones that were  closer away so they could get some.  It just didn't seem that the drops were working so I quit putting them out. 

Well, the other day there weren't any.  Yesterday, no ants.  Today, no ants.  I guess it just took a very long time to get to the queen so DING DONG THE QUEEN IS GONE!   Yea!

We both like chocolate but I am especially addicted to it.  I don't think a day goes by without some sort of chocolate.  I don't just have a tooth that craves sugar.  My whole body craves it.  I think the only way I would give it up is if I were put in a straight jacket .

Anyway, yesterday I read on the internet that twenty bars of chocolate at one time is a lethal dose!  I told Clyde this and he, of course said, "What a way to go.  You may have a sugar overdose but you wouldn't care."   I don't know about that.  One bar is plenty for me!

I didn't get to paint today.  Too many other things to do but I will get to paint tomorrow.  I am very excited about my latest mountain painting!  It is really coming along and I am glad I am documenting the different stages for myself and for people that would like to buy a print of one of the stages. 

I may mess something up and wish I had left it alone but now I can at least see  the versions I lost.  It is always an arm wrestling experience but I'll get it done.  Cheers!

As I have mentioned before, I love to joke around about internet scammers with Clyde.  The other day Tom Cruise asked me to be one of his friends on TSU.  A lot of people put up twitter accounts with a celebrity name and picture, but they also include a disclaimer that the account isn't really the celebrity's account.

This one on TSU just had the actor's picture, birth date, and nothing more.  I decided to have some fun with the scammer.  I sent him or her a message asking if the account was a fan page for the famous actor.  The response was, "Fan page, is that picture really of you or someone else? "  That sentence could mean the scammer was wondering why I was questioning the account or affirming my question.  I said it was me and the next message I received was exceptionally vulgar.  Definitely not Tom Cruise!  LOL!

I mostly watch movies.  I find great ones at our library and order from Netflix, so TV can be quite annoying with commercials.  I especially hate the ones that are repeated twice in the same break.

Clyde and I were discussing the one by a Roanoke business man that comes on all the time.  Clyde told me it has been voted the mostly likely to be muted commercial on local TV.

This businessman makes the claim that he has been helping people for quite a few years and we were wondering how many years we have been tortured by his ad.  I don't think the number of years we have had to watch it is as many years that he claims he has been helping people, but I'll bet it's close.  Argh!!!

The other day Clyde and I were watching a talent show and were utterly dumbfounded by one  contestant that threw himself into a pile of tacks.  I really have a hard time with that as a talent.  He did bleed, but not that much.

I think I am about done with my latest Kendall Expressions painting. In the fourth layer I decided to play off complicated areas with broad color fields.  I am pretty sure I am not going to make any more changes. 

The final state is below but I don't have it available on my website yet.  Soon!

Time to get back to a local painting.  Love this gorgeous New River Valley and I have plans for a large floral landscape based on a field near Childress, VA.

Clyde and I had a great meeting  with the president of Ferrum College, Jennifer Braaten. We enjoyed looking at the college's art collection and talking about Ferrum history.  Such a great school and beautiful campus!

The VSO Breeding Bird Foray is turning out to be a great success.  The Bird Man was worried he wouldn't have enough help but he has recruited 26 so he is smiling big right now!  The Foray goes through this Sunday and he will be out checking on all of the populations every day.  These surveys are important indicators of environmental health due to the fact that birds are much easier to find and monitor than other wildlife.  Go Bird Man!!!

I am working on the third layer of my latest Kendall Expressions painting.  Now I have hit a bump.  Not sure if I want to continue with the more complicated system of colors that I started today or stay with broad colors and brush strokes.  I won't be able to get back to it until Wednesday. 

Tomorrow I am meeting with the president of Ferrum College, Jennifer Braaten.  She wants to show me what is happening with art there and is considering buying one of my paintings for the school and one for her home.

The ants are back in full force!!!  Yikes!  I have the poison drops out but they are still here.   I refuse to put out dangerous pesticides and have tried all the natural ones.  The drops can't hurt us in any way but the ants are supposed to take the poison back to the nest and kill the queen. 

 

Well, yesterday I noticed there were only a few so I put more drops out.  Big mistake!  I could not believe how many ants showed up and sat perfectly round the drop and sipped away.  It made me think of the knights of the Round table but I don't think they were solving any world problems. 

I mentioned the round table to Clyde and he said they were probably solving more problems than Congress.  Wow!  Big government burn!!!

Also,  the VSO Foray in Franklin County, Va starts today!  Come on out and join this great, important birding effort!

 

The VSO Foray this year is in Franklin County, Virginia June 6 - 14th.

Information on nesting birds in Franklin County is scant. There has been only one previous foray that covered a small portion of Franklin County in 1976. The only other organized breeding bird study in the county was the Atlas Project, 1984 - 1989. This is a great opportunity for participants to contribute to a better understanding of nesting birds in this part of Virginia.

Evening gatherings will be at Ferrum College. For directions to the College click here. Specifically these will start at 5 pm each evening. We'll meet at the gazebo beside Adam's Lake on the Ferrum campus. We'll wrap up around 6 pm, and make plans for the next day as needed. Todd Fredericksen will have a cook out at his home on the evening of June 9th. I'll post directions soon for how to get to his home.
Some general reminders:

We won't call in birds for the foray counts.

 

Don't enter private property without permission, and be sure to call ahead when we do have permission.  Thank the owners for letting us on their property.

 

Don't skip "boring" areas (towns, farmer's fields, etc.).

Once a week we eat fish.  Clyde hates fish.  Alan and I like fish very much.  The other day Alan and I were discussing the fact that I mostly buy salmon. Fresh salmon is great but we also like cat fish.  There are others I like but Clyde can't stand them.

Alan and I were trying to decide which one we liked the best when Clyde said he thinks they should all just keep on swimming.
