Blue Ridge Parkway Artist is Pleased with Latest Butterfly Painting and You can stay...

Blue Ridge Parkway Artist

Please Check out My Story on Youtube!

I tried something different this time with my latest Suggestion painting that I filmed and will present on Monday.  I had been covering the surface quickly with a large brush and then spending more time on the second stage after I dried the first stage.  This time I wanted to have more complicate systems of color like my main work so I used a small brush and took more time on the first stage.  A nebulous, and I mean nebulous butterfly seemed to show up so that is what I went with.

The contrast between the butterfly and the background is not strong, so in the third stage I will separate the two and make it even more complicated.  Love to work with color! More than anything else, my work is about color regardless of the level of abstraction.  Looking forward to finishing the painting and I will have a link to the finished work here and in the description on the Youtube!

I am up to 191 followers now and hope to greatly increase that number!  Cheers on a Saturday!

Check out a representational colored pencil butterfly below.  The one I am working on is an imaginary abstract butterfly.

Life with The Word and Bird Man - Clyde Kessler

A long time ago I thought it would be a good idea to buy a small house so we wouldn't fill it up with stuff that we have to get rid of. Well, that didn't work. I have spent years moving things out and we really need more room for all of Clyde's records.

A lot of his research needs to be in paper form rather than on a computer so, instead of scaling down, we will be scaling up.

Last night when I made the very short trip from the kitchen to the other end of the house to find my glasses and other things, I thought about what it would be like in a big house.

I told Clyde I had better sharpen up before we move.

Well, if you get too sharp you might throw me out.

No, you and all your stuff gets to stay.

That's a relief.

Life with The Word and Bird Man - Clyde Kessler

I have a few phobias.  I don't like to be in a high place unless the guard rail comes up to my neck.  I don't even like the walking track but I stay away from the rail.

Actually, I can't think of any other phobias except my new one.  I have never been afraid to go to the dentist until now.  I have exposed roots so if I don't get novacaine on the lowers I can't stand simple cleanings.

I jokingly say I have dental phobia but I will go for my cleanings.  This last time the novacaine didn't work on the right side and that is where my worst exposed root is so I had to jump out of the chair and hit my head on the ceiling a few times.

Clyde said I should color code my teeth so the hygienist will know which ones to be very careful with.  Ha ha! What am I supposed to use?  Acrylic paint and poison myself?  Well, that would take care of the dental visit problems.  No me, no teeth cleanings.

LOL!

Life with The Word and Bird Man - Clyde Kessler

Well, here I go again.  We are getting another computer tune up.  This amazing machine needs more attention than our cars do.  I wish it didn't have to spend so much time in the shop, especially since the shop is also my home.

We have a great young friend to help us but it usually takes most of a day- so is this machine such a time saver or is it something we have to baby sit and burp all the time?

I just sold a framed print online so I guess I have a lot of nerve to complain, but I do get exasperated with our computer.  I better get to work since I won't be able to most of tomorrow.

Yikes!

Blue Ridge Parkway Artist, Still Dragging, and Gone Bad...

 Blue Ridge Parkway Artist

!

For the first time ever I uploaded a Work in Progress to my website.  I am so pleased with my latest Kendall Expressions painting that I wanted to give an internet preview!  I hope to have it done in a few days and then I will upload the final picture for sale or prints!

Life with The Word and Bird Man - Clyde Kessler

Clyde is better but I am still dragging and neither one of us has come up with a new funny but there is another great one on Facebook!  Picture this.  A man opens his refrigerator and a gun is aimed at him.

The caption reads, "Honey, the chicken has gone bad."

Now that one really put a big smile on my weary face!  I do believe in the old saying that laughter is the best medicine.  I need a truck load right now.

Blue Ridge Parkway Artist, Spring Painting, and How do you like your Emails?

 Blue Ridge Parkway Artist

I have had a hard time getting to my blog today.  I think I am coming down with a cold and am not moving very fast.  I did get to paint but it was hard standing up.  I think I will get this done and take it easy for the rest of the evening.

Cheers!  Stay Well!

Life with The Word and Bird Man - Clyde Kessler

Clyde and I have been talking about the barrage of emails we get every day.  Emails are sort of like eggs.

Some people send stringy ones.  They email you over and over again in the same day.  They can't seem to wait for an answer.

Some people send hard boiled ones.  These are ones that are so loaded with information that it looks like they have been cooking their thoughts for a long time.

Clyde and I like the over easy ones.  These are rather short emails from people that don't expect you to answer in ten minutes or even the same day.

I have one correspondent that never answers right away.  Sometimes he answers in a day or so and sometimes it is a week.  I never worry about those kind of emails.

Too many hard boiled ones today.  I will get to them tomorrow.

Don't forget about The Blue Ridge Discovery Center that Clyde works closely with to promote this beautiful mountain region!

I don't have a funny of my own and Clyde has not been feeling well but there was a great one on Facebook!  I laughed out loud!

There was a picture of an adorable baby in a sink and the caption read, "If you see something my Mom put on Facebook, remind her that I am still in the sink."  Love it!  I have over 2000 Facebook friends, a fan page, and a Community page.  I get such a kick out of sharing gems like that one!

The Story of Boojum and Hootin' Annie

Eagle Nest Mountain stands at the southern edge of the Balsam mountain range and was once home to the luxurious Eagle Nest Hotel. Guests at the hotel soon began to hear the story of a strange creature who lived in the area. The thing was not quite a man and not quite an animal — it stood about eight feet tall and every inch of its body was covered with shaggy grey hair, except for its human face. The creature was named Boojum, and he seemed to be harmless enough, but he did have two all-too human habits.

The first of these was the Boojum was greedy and he loved to hoard gems. Rubies and emeralds are found naturally throughout the mountains of North Carolina, and Boojum loved to hunt for these pretty, precious stones and hide them away in his own treasure hoards.  He would then bury them in one of the secret caves on the mountain

Boojum's second habit  was that he loved to look at pretty girls. Back in those days, a young woman who wanted to have a bath might head off into the woods to find a secluded pond at the base of a waterfall. There, safe from human eyes, she could strip down and bathe. A young woman enjoying herself in the water would often hear a rustle in the bushes and look up to see his hairy face peering down at her.

Now, most of these girls would quickly gather up their clothes and run off back home as soon as they saw him. But one young woman named Annie was braver than most, and one day when she was bathing in a stream deep in the balsam groves on Eagle Nest, she looked up and saw Boojum staring down at her. But Annie didn't run, in fact, she looked into Boojum's sorrowful eyes and saw that above all else he was just another lonely soul living on the mountain. Annie fell in love with those sad eyes, and she fell in love with Boojum, and she left her home and her family to go and live with Boojum deep in the mountain woods as his wife.

As much as Boojum loved Annie, and as much as Annie loved Boojum, Boojum still hung on to his love of jewels. On certain nights, he would leave his bride alone and go searching for jewels on the mountain. Annie, growing lonely, would go out in search of Boojum, and she developed a peculiar holler, something that sounded like a cross between a monkey and a hooting owl, that she would use to call out to Boojum. Boojum would use the same cry to call back to her, and eventually the two calls would come closer together until they came together on the hills.

Annie and Boojum calling to each other was often heard by guests at the Eagle Nest Hotel. Folklorist John Parris has said that Annie's owl-like holler was the source of the term "Hootenanny," which appeared in the language around the turn of the twentieth century and meant any kind of party or get-together. In the 1960's the term was expanded by pop artists to mean a gathering of folk musicians.

I am finding more interesting myths and legends from the first people of the Blue Ridge Mountains.  I especially like the stories about their interpretations of nature!

Cherokee Animal Legends

The Cherokees believe the sun was a woman that lived in the east and the moon was her brother that lived in the west.

The Redbird was the daughter of the sun and eclipses were from a giant frog that lived in the sky and tried to swallow people.

The lightening and the rainbow were the dress of the sons of thunder that lived in the west above the sky vault.

There are several stories about stars.  One is that a dog stole some corn meal and was whipped.  The dog ran across the sky to the north and sprayed the corn across the sky which created The Milky Way.

The buzzard is an important animal in their mythology.  He made the mountains and valleys with his wings and is considered to be a doctor!  That certainly is a different view of this bird than the one many people have today.

Unfortunately many people  consider the vulture to be a pest and a lot of locales work hard to drive them off which is a big ecological mistake.

I found these legends on Cherokee Myths and Legends by Lowell Kirk online.

More tomorrow!

For among the finches of Daphne Major, natural selection is neither rare nor slow: it is taking place by the hour, and we can watch. In this dramatic story of groundbreaking scientific research, Jonathan Weiner follows these scientists as they watch Darwin's finches and come up with a new understanding of life itself. The Beak of the Finch is an elegantly written and compelling masterpiece of theory and explication in the tradition of Stephen Jay Gould.

More Beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway vistas and Thoughts on Parties...

My Artwork

purplebrsunsetcopyrightPurple Sunset on The Blue Ridge     original pastel painting has been sold

Prints on paper or canvas available at       KENDALL KESSLER ART

This Blue Ridge pastel painting is one of my favorites!  The wildflowers and color in the sky create a serene, beautiful mood.  I could never be sad in a place like this!

I have always been what artists call a colorist.  I carefully construct my work according to what I consider to be good principles of art and design but the colors always take off and lead the way in the expression.

So far I have two painting of Buffalo Mountain.  In this one the mountain with it's distinctive hump is a little left of center on the bottom.  I am especially pleased with the energetic cloud effect.

The Man Who Moved a Mountain

In yesterday's blog I mentioned Bob Childress, who is known as the man who moved a mountain.  Here is a little more about him.

Bob Childress was born into the then isolated Buffalo mountain community that was full of violence and alcoholism.  He said his earliest memory was of his mother nursing his illness by holding a rag soaked in whisky to his mouth.

He was unable to attend school and often resorted to violence and began drinking heavily. He vowed to quit drinking after he witnessed a massacre at a court house. He entered law enforcement and eventually became a minister.

He returned to high school at the age of 30 in the same room school as his 6 year old son.

He was ordained a Presbyterian minister in 1926 and was in demand by churches throughout Virginia and the Eastern United States.

His desire was to return to his Appalachian community to help eradicate the violence and ignorance of the region.

Through his 40 years of ministry he built and led congregations at 6 "Rock Churches" of which 5 remain today.

In 2002, the Churches were submitted to the National Register of Historic Places as the Reverend Robert Childress Presbyterian Churches.

Not bad for a boy from an alcoholic community!

I gained this information from my husband, Clyde Kessler, and from Wikopedia.

Life with the Word and Bird Man - Clyde Kessler

Before I write about something my husband said the other day I want to make sure everyone knows he is very well liked by all that come into contact with him and is one of the most diplomatic people I have ever met.

A few days ago we were talking about parties.  I am a painfully shy person so I don't really like to be around more than a few people at a time.

My husband is essentially a very nice curmudgeon.

He said he wouldn't go to his own party!  LOL
