Blue Ridge Parkway Artist, Two New Florals, and Looking for the Light Again...
Blue Ridge Parkway Artist
I have been going through my portfolio to show my florals. Today I thought I would show two brand new ones that are part of my series, Suggestions. These are paintings that I am doing based on an Abstract Expressionist surface. When I see a shape I go with it and develop a colorful, abstract painting.
Petal Play Original Acrylic Painting NFS
Prints on Paper, Canvas, Metal, Greeting Cards, Pillows, !phone and galaxy phone cases Available at KENDALL KESSLER ART
Petal Play is another sensuous, colorful painting from my series,
Suggestions. I am starting with an abstract expressionist surface and
then looking for forms that appear in the paint. This time I saw two
large flowers in the position that I have them in the painting. They
look like a cross between a petunia and morning glory. I am very pleased
with the color in this one.
A Vase of Color Original Acrylic Painting NFS
Prints on Paper, Canvas, Metal, Greeting Cards, Pillows, !phone and galaxy phone cases Available at KENDALL KESSLER ART
A Vase of color is another sensuous, colorful painting from my series,
Suggestions. I am starting with an abstract expressionist surface and
then looking for forms that appear in the paint. This time I saw a
rounded shape at the bottom so I turned the painting into a soft focus
floral. I am very pleased with the flowing, circular motion in this one.
Life with The Word and Bird Man - Clyde Kessler
It has been quite cloudy lately so the light in my studio is not what I want it to be. As I have mentioned before, when it is very dark outside the warm colors are hard to see so I end up with stronger warms than I want. I sure do have to look for the light to work.
I remember reading about Pierre Bonnard when he was instructing a child he thought had talent. He remarked that they had to work before the good light was gone.
When you work with a zillion colors light is extremely important. This is not a problem for my naturalist husband who doesn't mind getting up in the middle of the night to catch the owls for bird counts. The stereotype of the bird watcher is completely false. They are rugged people that walk up and down mountains in brutal weather for accurate records.
I think I will quit gripping about the light and get to work. My studio is very comfortable.

On the Wild Side and Maybe I need a sign....
I used to think that artists didn't really return to old paintings to re-work them. I was wrong. I have done that on a number of occasions and am doing that right now. Pierre Bonnard, one of my heroes would work on three paintings at a time and turn them to the wall when he wasn't working on them. I cover mine, too. Paintings will drive you crazy if you let them. I don't want to go crazy. I like painting too much. Anyway, years ago I did a painting of a tiger's head and didn't like it at all. I put it away and when I was cleaning some things out I found it and decided to work on it again and it is coming right along! Wild animals can be a a great experience in oil paint! Colors and brushwork flying all over the place!
Tonight as I was making a right onto a gravel driveway in Montgomery County I slowed down so as not to mess up my car with ruts. I still got off the main road in a reasonable amount of time but the car behind me screeched on the gas pedal to let me know what a jerk I was in his opinion. I have to turn into this driveway every Friday so maybe I need a sign on my bumper that says this driveway is full of ruts so I am turning slowly. Give me a break all you creepy tailgators!
I have a large stencil with my Studio advertisement and phone number on the back windshield. When we got home my husband answered the phone and all he heard was a loud, screetching whistle. Maybe that was the guy that was behind me. You think?

Various Comments on my Work and Run Over by Chocolate

Over the years I have received a lot of interesting comments on my work. Artists and patrons have often compared me to Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Cezanne. One artist saw the influence of 20th century colorist Pierre Bonnard on my work. Many artists have seen the influence of Claude Monet. These are artists I greatly admire but I think my work is unique to me and I have developed a style that has a tremendous amount of visual strength through my own layering process.
My favorite comment that I hear a lot from admirers is that my paintings make them want to touch them. I am especially pleased with my complex surfaces that can only be understood through visual language that the average person does not study. I think the comment that they want to touch the surface indicates the visual communication has been successful.
I have received a lot of praise from patrons over the years but my favorite comment came from a woman that bought my painting at the Three Rivers Art Festival in Pennsylvania. She sent me an email and said she made her husband buy that painting for her and when they divorced it was the only thing they fought over. I'm sorry her marriage didn't work out but what a compliment!
I love chocolate. I don't know any people that don't like chocolate. My favorite kinds are the chewy kinds - especially chocolate with caramel centers. I am quite the sugar addict. What do you call someone that has been run over by too much chocolate? Tootsienami!

I have to Cover Them and I Hope the Multi taskers are not...

My studio is a room that my brother-in-law attached to our house many years ago. Then he got married and had five kids and we haven't seen him since! Just joking. Anyway, I can see my easel from my bedroom and I used to study my paintings from a distance during the day. Now they have become so complicated and intense that I have to cover them when I am not working on them. Every change in light makes such a difference and I can't work on them all day long. Now I understand why the famous 20th century artist Pierre Bonnard would turn them to the wall so he wouldn't become too involved in them. I tell my students that when you are analyzing every square inch and making decisions on whether or not that section looks right and whether or not it looks right with the rest of the work then you are into heavy duty art. It doesn't matter whether it is looks like something or not, there are zillions of visual decisions to be made. What a fascinating experience!
I am becoming more and more concerned with other drivers. I think it much more likely to be in an accident these days than when I was young. I am now much aware of what is going on around me. I just hope that all the multi taskers that eat, talk on a cell phone, watch a movie, read, and check their hair in the mirror are not multi stupid.
