I am anxious to get to work on my latest Blue Ridge Parkway painting.  I had to order paint recently and for some reason I am having a hard time getting a good cerulean blue.  That color was fantastic when I was young but for some reason it seems to have become chalky. 

I ordered some very expensive small tubes and was amazed that the color wasn't as good as the less expensive large tubes.  Go figure!   I think I have enough for today and I have another order in.

Meanwhile, here is my latest Suggestion painting!  Real proud of this one!

Fantasy Universe is another sensuous, colorful painting from my series,
Suggestions. I am starting with an abstract expressionist surface and then looking for forms that appear in the paint. This time nebulous spheres showed up so I decided to turn the scene into a fantasy universe. Outer space gone amok! I am especially pleased with the energy in this one.

My husband's sense of humor is different to say the least.  Most of it is based on word play which makes sense since he is a poet.  He cracks me up all the time but sometimes the humor is not so funny as it is clever.

The other day he decided to walk to a small store that has a small grill when we were socked in with the snow.  It is only a five minute walk and he walks as much as possible.   He wanted to know if I wanted a Mountain Dew which I love but only drink once a week since it has so much caffeine and I am not a good sleeper.

Before he asked I was just about to ask him to get me one.  I told him he read my mind.  He replied that he was psycho.  I said I think the work you are looking for is psychic.  He said he knew but psycho is more fun to say.

Okay.  Not worried.  I know he is a great guy!

Here is my latest still life.  I don't have a title for it and it isn't anywhere else on the internet.  It will be on Etsy tonight and hopefully prints will be available tomorrow on my website!  I am very pleased with the brushwork and color in this one!

I like to argue with inanimate objects.  I yell at my computer mouse all the time.  It is battery operated and likes to lose contact with the computer frequently.  I wish I had a cat to feed it to sometimes.

Anyway, last night I was working with my weight to help strengthen my pathetic arms.  I have always had weak arms and had a frozen shoulder a number of years ago so I try to swim once a week and use a weight at night.

Clyde put on the clean sheets and they were sagging at the end of the bed.  I keep my weight under the bed.  After I did the lifts I was trying to put the weight back but it kept getting caught on the bed spread so I yelled at it to get in there.

Clyde asked who I was talking to under the bed.  Yeah, I guess that does sound bad but it was just my weight, dear!  No guys under the bed.

I am very pleased with my new Blue Ridge Parkway painting.  It is only in the second stage but I think it is coming along beautifully!  I ran into a great teacher from Radford University and she said students still talk about how much they learned from me!  What a great compliment!

Scammers, scammers, and more scammers!  Yikes!  I am getting one or two every day or so.  They all want so badly to get to know me.  I talk to Clyde about them all the time.  He says they may all be the same person posing as different guys.

Anyway the latest one wanted to know if I am having a good day, did I have a good night, and have I had my morning coffee yet.   Of course, I can't be absolutely sure this guy is a scammer but I am 99.9% sure.  If I am wrong and he comes across this blog, then sorry.  I sincerely doubt that is the case.  I communicate a little with them in case they aren't scammers and then I stop.

I have had a lot of clever lines from these people over the years and I fully expect to one day get a message that God told them to contact me and give them my bank account information.  I'll bet that is next!

Mary Beth's Gift is one of my favorite still lifes. I am especially pleased with the use of line and intense color contrast in this work. I have always believed that it is not what you do in art but how you do it. This plant was given to me by an office mate and I liked it so much that I decided to make it into a work of art. I found the perfect doily that adds to the strong linear accents and contrasts nicely with the complementary colors.

 

This pastel painting won second place in the Pastel Division at an International Juried Competition in Nogales, Arizona.

Old Plant is a vibrant painting of one of our planters by an open window. I am especially pleased with the strong patterns and value contrast in this work. I haven't met the medium I don't like and oil pastels are high on the list of favorites. My main medium is oil paint but I am also love pastels and have won awards in both from prominent artists.

It has been a while since I posted about the Blue Ridge Discovery Center that Clyde works with so here is some interesting news.   The hikes will start up again in the warm weather!

BioSurvey: Matthews State Forest

In support of and compliance with the Virginia State Forest’s objective to demonstrate and educate, Blue Ridge Discovery Center is proposing a multi-year biological survey of Matthews State Forest. Through this project, BRDC will also bring attention to wildlife habitat and water quality while providing relevant data for future land use planning.
To reinforce the educational component, BRDC will enlist science and art teachers based in the Galax, Grayson and Carroll counties region. Through these teachers, we will create groups of students to conduct the field studies under the direction of BRDC staff and volunteers from local universities and colleges.

I'm sure everyone knows about all the online scammers that get a photo of someone else and post as that person.  We women get bombarded with scammers that tell us we are beautiful so they can scam money out of us in one way or another.  I get those all the time but I am not always sure the person is a scammer so I communicate a little with them before getting rid of them.

My latest two scammers that use the flattery method have been on Twitter.  One of them I knew right away  was a scammer and I did not respond.  The other one I was not so sure about so I said thank you.  He then asked if I was married and I replied that I was.

His next comment cracked me up.  He said my husband is so ucky.  Well, I don't think he is ucky at all.  Of course it was a typo which he corrected with the next comment.  My husband is lucky according to him.  After a few more comments I was convinced he was a scammer and unfollowed him. 

The sad thing is that I do get these all the time so I guess some poor women are falling for their tricks or I wouldn't keep getting them.  Lots of creeps on the internet!  Watch out ladies!

Radford is awaiting a huge snow storm and Clyde has a lot of bird seed out.   He has been griping about the squirrels.  They get a lot of the seed.  According to the Bird Man, squirrels get lazy in the winter and go on Bird Seed Welfare.

I asked him what the squirrels are supposed to do.  Don't they just hide away with their nuts?  He said if that were true, they would be in here with us.

I love to tease my husband.  It is great to get a laugh out of him and he usually has a clever retort for me.  I like to post those.

The other night I had to go out on some errands.  I told Clyde I may return.  He played along and said he hoped I would return.  I told him I would if I didn't find someone sexier than him.  Oh wait, there isn't anyone sexier so I guess I will return.

I think the groan he let out could be heard throughout Radford.  I am surprised no one called up to ask if someone was dying.

I think he was still gagging when he got up for work the next day.

What is the point of being married if you can't joke around?

This time I decided to let the scene remain soft and more indistinct than some of my other Suggestion paintings. I am pleased with the soft effect.

Clyde and I still have this awful bug that we can't seem to shake.  I should probably plant a tree when I am well.  What a lot of tissues!  Clyde will be seeing a specialist soon due to the ear problem he is having.  Mine are fine.

The congestion is awful, the fatigue is bad, but the real problem is I don't want any chocolate!  Now that is a serious illness!  I doubt the chocolate industry will suffer but I am.  I hope my taste buds get back in action soon!

Blue Ridge Parkway Artist

I am pleased to have finished my third Fall Blue Ridge Parkway painting and hope to start a new one soon!  I am especially pleased with the atmosphere in this one!

Magenta Fall is a lovely Autumn scene on The Blue Ridge Parkway. In this vista the Fall colors are as exciting as the colors in the evening sky. A feast for the eyes! I live in the most beautiful place in the world!

 

Life with The Word and Bird Man - Clyde Kessler

Clyde watches a lot of nature programs and oftentimes they are on when I am in the studio so I can hear them, too.   The other day I heard an announcer say that even though the grizzly bear was a long way off he was still glad to see one.

That struck me as an odd thing to say so I called out to Clyde that if I were in Grizzly country I would not want to see  one close up.  His answer was that he would prefer a satellite shot since he didn't think they can jump that high.  Great exaggeration from the Word Man!

Clyde is a dedicated naturalist but, as I have mentioned before, he really doesn't want to go anywhere where the wildlife is waiting for him with a knife and fork as soon as he gets off the bus. 

This isn't entirely true as he has spent countless hours walking up and down the Blue Ridge mountains and had some close calls with black bears.  I guess hanging around grizzlies is one step too far!

Clyde and I are still stumbling around and his fever is back.  Mine is definitely gone so I am trying to do a little more today.  Trying not to over do but that is like asking the sun not to rise. 

Here are some recent Suggestion paintings!  The series is really keeping me busy, just not this week.  Looking forward to getting back to it and starting a new Blue Ridge Parkway Painting!

Where is the Fox is another sensuous, colorful painting from my series,
Suggestions. I am starting with an abstract expressionist surface and then looking for forms that appear in the paint. This time I didn't see any nebulous shape until the painting had dried. I looked over at it and saw an abstract fox at the top the painting and then notice three bird like shapes in the center and at the bottom. I brought all of the shapes out a little stronger and am very pleased with the effect of a swirling painting that has to be sorted out by the viewer.

Flower Spiral is another sensuous, colorful painting from my series,
Suggestions. I am starting with an abstract expressionist surface and then looking for forms that appear in the paint. This time a zinnia like shape began to appear so I made it into a spiral flower scene. I am especially pleased with the bold blue in this one.

Life with The Word and Bird Man - Clyde Kessler

A whole week without bird watching.  I know my poor husband is suffering as much from that as from this horrible bug.  I live to paint and he lives to write poetry and observe nature.  I'm surprised the birds aren't lined up outside the window and asking what is going on?

Anyway this illness has made me think about how unfair germs are.  You can't see them.  I think something this nasty and dangerous should be visible to the naked eye.  I mentioned that to Clyde and he said what good would that do.  They would just flash an obscene gesture and attack you anyway.

My husband and I have been very sick for days.  This blog was supposed to be here on Monday.  Better late than never!

Life with The Word and Bird Man - Clyde Kessler

Yesterday I was dragging.   Too much to do as always.  I decided to be lazy anyway.  I didn't clean up until before I fixed dinner and then I just left the dishes and went on to do other things, including watching an old Peter Sellers movie.  I never watch a movie in one sitting so I will finish that today.

Clyde is feeling better and when he saw the dirty dishes he started to wash them.  I came into the kitchen and told him I was revolting.  I was expecting the not anymore than usual reply but I guess he was too tired for a retort.

Anyway sometimes you just have to come to a halt and relax.  The work is always there waiting for you.
